Dynalite Not Working? Common Philips Dynalite Faults Explained

Dynalite not working? Philips Dynalite runs the lighting in plenty of Sydney homes, particularly larger houses and renovations from the 2000s and 2010s. It is a solid, professional system, but like any smart home lighting it eventually throws up faults. When it plays up, the symptoms usually point to one of three things: the network, the hardware or the programming.

Here are the common Dynalite faults we see, what each one usually means, and what you can safely check before calling anyone.

How Dynalite is put together

A Dynalite system has three parts:

  • Wall panels and touchscreens, such as Antumbra keypads and Envision touchscreens, which send commands.
  • Load controllers, the dimmers and relays in the switchboard, which switch and dim the lighting circuits.
  • The DyNet network, the data cable that links them all together.

Dynalite organises lighting into areas (usually rooms or zones) and presets (the scenes for each area). Every panel button and schedule is programmed to recall a preset in an area. When the wrong thing happens, that mapping is often where the fault is.

Fault 1: Panels pressed, nothing happens anywhere

Every panel is unresponsive and no lights change.

What it usually means: a problem with the DyNet network or the power feeding it, rather than any single panel. A tripped circuit in the switchboard, a failed power supply, a damaged network cable or a faulty device on the network can all take the whole system down.

What you can check: look for a tripped breaker or RCD and reset it once. If it trips again, leave it and call.

Fault 2: A panel turns on the wrong lights

A button that used to do the living room now does the hallway, or one panel controls a completely different area.

What it usually means: programming. It often happens after a device has been replaced and gone in with default settings, or after someone has made changes without the full project. The hardware is usually fine.

Fault 3: The panel clicks but no lights come on

What it usually means: usually a failed dimmer or relay channel rather than a network fault. The click is the relay operating while the load side has failed. It is a component-level repair.

Fault 4: Presets and scenes lost after a power failure

Lights still switch, but the carefully set scenes are gone, or the house comes back from a blackout in the wrong state.

What it usually means: common, and usually recoverable. Presets and schedules can drop out after a power event or switchboard work while the hardware is fine. It is normally a reprogramming job.

Fault 5: The Envision touchscreen is dead or frozen

What it usually means: older Envision Touch screens are no longer made, but the DyNet network behind them is usually healthy. A current panel can often be fitted, or control can move to a phone or tablet.

Fault 6: The app or remote access stopped working

The lighting works from the walls but the app cannot find the house.

What it usually means: usually the network, not the lighting. A new modem from your internet provider often changes the address range, so the Dynalite gateway is no longer where the app expects it. See home network and Wi-Fi repairs for why this happens.

Fault 7: LED downlights glow or flicker

What it usually means: the dimmer type or settings do not suit the LED drivers. It is common after a lamp upgrade and is almost always fixable without replacing the lights.

What you can safely check yourself

  • One area or the whole house? One area points to a panel or load controller. The whole house points to the network or power.
  • The switchboard: look for a tripped breaker or RCD. Reset once, do not open covers.
  • Recent changes: a blackout, a new modem, an electrician working on the board. Mention it when you call.
  • Photos: the switchboard and the panel that is misbehaving tell a technician a lot before they arrive.

Avoid factory resetting anything. A reset can wipe the programming from a device that was working, which turns a small job into a bigger one.

Why Dynalite faults need a programmer as well as an electrician

Almost every Dynalite callout ends in one of two places: the fault is hardware, or it is the programming on the DyNet network. Replacement Dynalite devices have to be programmed into the system with Dynalite’s software before they do anything useful.

If the original project file has been lost, the programming can usually be read from the network and the project rebuilt. Here is how that works.

Frequently asked questions

Who can reprogram a Philips Dynalite system?

An integrator who works with Dynalite’s programming software and knows DyNet. A general electrician can replace wiring, but a replacement Dynalite device needs programming before it works.

Why did my Dynalite presets disappear?

Presets and schedules can drop out after a power failure or switchboard work, even when the hardware is fine. It is usually recoverable by reprogramming.

Can Dynalite be controlled from my phone?

Usually, yes. With the right gateway and app, or through a control platform such as Savant, an existing Dynalite system can be controlled from a phone or tablet without replacing the lighting hardware.

Can you work on a Dynalite system someone else installed?

Yes. Most Dynalite service work is on systems installed by somebody else. Having the project file helps, but it is not essential.

Is it worth fixing an old Dynalite system?

In most homes, yes. The cabling and most load controllers are usually sound, and failed parts or dated touchscreens can be replaced without rewiring. Repair or replace? walks through the decision.
