C-Bus vs Dynalite vs KNX: How to Tell Which Lighting Control System You Have

If your home has keypads instead of ordinary light switches, it almost certainly runs a lighting control system. In Sydney homes, that is usually one of three: Clipsal C-Bus, Philips Dynalite or KNX. Plenty of owners do not know which one they have, especially if they bought the house with the system already in it.

It matters more than it sounds. The system decides who can service it, which parts fit, and what software is needed to change anything. This guide shows you how to tell C-Bus vs Dynalite vs KNX in a few minutes, and how the three compare.

Why the brand matters

All three do the same basic job: keypads send commands over a control network, and dimmers and relays in the switchboard switch the lights. The differences are in who makes them and how they are programmed.

  • C-Bus is made by Clipsal (Schneider Electric) and programmed in C-Bus Toolkit.
  • Dynalite is made by Philips (Signify) and programmed with Dynalite’s own software.
  • KNX is an open standard used by hundreds of manufacturers and programmed in ETS.

A technician who knows one system well will not necessarily be able to program another. Knowing what you have means you call the right person the first time.

Clue 1: The keypads

Look at the keypads and any small print on them.

  • C-Bus keypads are Clipsal ranges. The Clipsal name is often visible, and some models have a small screen showing the button labels.
  • Dynalite keypads are Philips Dynalite. The Antumbra range is common in homes.
  • KNX keypads come from many brands, such as Basalte, Gira, Jung, Zennio, ABB and Schneider. A designer keypad from a European brand is often a sign of KNX.

Clue 2: The switchboard

Open the switchboard door (not the covers) and look at the equipment on the DIN rail. Lighting control units are usually labelled with the brand. You will see Clipsal C-Bus, Philips Dynalite, or a KNX manufacturer’s name along with a KNX power supply. Take a photo while you are there. It is the single most useful thing to send a technician.

Clue 3: The cable

If you can see the control cable anywhere, such as in the switchboard or behind a keypad being replaced:

  • C-Bus cable is usually pink.
  • KNX bus cable is usually green.
  • Dynalite typically runs over data cable, which varies in colour.

Clue 4: The touchscreen or app might be a different brand

This catches a lot of people out. The app or touchscreen you use every day may not be made by the lighting brand at all. Platforms such as Savant, Control4 and Crestron often sit on top of C-Bus, Dynalite or KNX lighting. So a “Savant house” may still have C-Bus dimmers in the switchboard. That changes who you call for a lighting fault.

Clue 5: The paperwork

Check the handover folder, the builder’s documents or old invoices. A switchboard schedule, a programming printout or an invoice from the original installer usually names the system.

Which is best?

There is no single winner for an existing home. The best system is usually the one you already have, kept healthy. The cabling in the walls is the expensive part, and all three can be repaired, extended and put on a modern app.

For new builds and major renovations, KNX is often favoured because it is an open standard: you are not tied to one manufacturer or one installer. C-Bus and Dynalite remain good choices, particularly where they are already in the house. Read what is a smart home? for the bigger picture.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my house has C-Bus?

Look for Clipsal-branded keypads and Clipsal C-Bus units on the DIN rail in the switchboard. C-Bus control cable is usually pink. A photo of the switchboard confirms it.

Is C-Bus better than KNX?

Neither is better in every case. KNX is an open standard with many manufacturers, which suits new builds. C-Bus is widespread in Australian homes and is well supported. In an existing home the best choice is usually to keep and maintain what is there.

Can C-Bus, Dynalite and KNX work together?

Not directly, but a control platform such as Savant can integrate them, so one app or keypad can control lighting on more than one system.

Can I change from C-Bus to KNX without rewiring?

Often a large part of the wiring can stay. The switchboard equipment and keypads change, and whether the existing control cable can be reused depends on the house. A site visit confirms it.

Who can service my lighting control system?

Someone who programs your particular system. That means C-Bus Toolkit for C-Bus, Dynalite’s software for Dynalite, and ETS for KNX. We work on all three.
