Motorised blinds and curtains

Motorised blinds and shading

Blinds and curtains on the same keypads and scenes as the lighting. They close for privacy at sunset, track the sun on the western glass in summer and open with the morning scene.

Why motorise them

On a house with a lot of glass, blinds are the biggest single control over heat, glare and privacy. Nobody walks around the house adjusting eleven blinds four times a day. A system will.

Motorised blinds and curtains become part of the scenes: Morning lifts the bedroom blinds, Leaving closes the street side, Cinema blacks out the media room, and a summer schedule drops the western blinds before the afternoon sun hits the glass.

  • Roller blinds, sheers and blockouts
  • Curtain tracks, including long and curved runs
  • External screens and awnings
  • Skylight blinds
  • Group control by façade or room
  • Sun and wind response from a weather station

Wired or battery?

Wired motors

The right choice for new builds and major renovations. Power and control are cabled to each window head at rough-in, so there are no batteries to charge and the motors run from the control system directly. Quiet, reliable and invisible.

Battery and wireless

The right choice where the walls are finished. Motors are charged occasionally and controlled over radio, brought into the same scenes through a gateway. A good option for renovations and apartments.

For new builds: cable to every window head that might ever take a motor, even if you don't motorise it now. It's the cheapest line item on the job and the most common regret.

Working with your blind supplier

If your interior designer or blind supplier is already on the project, we coordinate with them on motor type, control method and head-box sizes, then program the blinds into the system. If not, we'll recommend a supplier we've worked with.

What drives the cost of motorised blinds

We don't publish package prices, because two houses that sound the same can be very different on site. These are the things that move the number.

  • Number of windows and whether they're grouped
  • Wired motors or battery motors
  • Curtain track lengths and curves
  • External screens and weather sensing
  • The blind supplier's fabric and head-box choices

Where we work

Based on the Northern Beaches, we design and install across the Eastern Suburbs, the Lower and Upper North Shore and the harbour side of the Inner West: from Palm Beach, Clareville and Clontarf to Mosman, Hunters Hill, Wahroonga, Point Piper, Vaucluse, Bellevue Hill and Dover Heights, and further afield for larger projects.

Questions we get asked

Can motorised blinds be controlled from the same keypads as the lights?

Yes. Wired motors connect to the lighting control system, so a single button can set the lights and the blinds together.

Can you motorise blinds in an existing house?

Usually, yes. Battery-powered motors avoid new cabling and can be brought into the same scenes through a wireless gateway.

Do motorised blinds help with heating and cooling?

Significantly, on houses with large areas of glass. Scheduling the blinds against the sun reduces heat gain in summer and keeps heat in on winter evenings.

What do I need to do at rough-in for motorised blinds?

Run power and control cabling to each window head where a motor might go, and confirm head-box sizes with the blind supplier. We provide the cable schedule.

Do you repair existing motorised blinds or awnings?

When they're part of a home automation system, yes: we find whether the fault is the motor or the control side and fix it. Blinds, awnings and louvre roofs that run on their own remote, with no automation system, are best serviced by the manufacturer or the installer.
