Smart Home Renovations and Retrofit

Most Sydney homes are not new. Adding automation to a house that is already standing is a different discipline, and it is a large part of what we do.

You do not need to gut the house to get a system that works.

Smart Home Renovations and Retrofit Sydney

What is actually possible in an existing home

More than most people are told. The constraint is rarely the technology, it is access.

  • Where walls are open — effectively a new build, with the same options
  • Where ceilings are accessible — lighting control, sensors, speakers and cameras are all straightforward
  • Where nothing is open — retrofit dimming behind existing plates, wireless control and targeted cabling still deliver a great deal

Solid brick terraces and double-brick homes need routes planned rather than assumed, which is the work that decides whether a retrofit is smooth or painful.

Staging it so you are not paying twice

A renovation is the cheapest opportunity you will get, but you do not have to do everything at once.

The rule we work to: cable while the walls are open, fit the devices when you are ready. Conduit and cable are cheap during works and expensive afterwards. Keypads, screens and speakers can wait.

That lets you put lighting control in now and add audio, blinds or cameras in two years without opening anything again.

Working alongside your builder

We coordinate with the builder and the electrician rather than arriving afterwards and asking for holes. Switchboard and cable schedules are issued before rough-in so the electrical scope is priced correctly.

If you already have an older system, a renovation is usually the right moment to repair or extend it rather than replace it.

Questions we get asked

Can I add smart lighting without rewiring the whole house?

Often yes. Retrofit dimming modules behind existing switch plates cover a lot of ground, and full bus wiring is only needed where you want the complete system.

We are renovating part of the house. Can we do it in stages?

Yes, and it is usually the sensible approach. Cable the areas that are open, fit devices as budget allows.

Will it work with the system already installed?

Usually. Extending an existing C-Bus, Dynalite or KNX system is normally cheaper than replacing it.

Do you need the walls open?

Not necessarily, but it makes everything cheaper. Tell us what is opening and we will tell you what is worth doing while it is.
