System takeovers

Nobody will service your smart home?

The installer has retired, gone under or stopped returning calls. Nobody has the programming file. Every electrician who looks at it says it needs ripping out. We take these on, and they're almost always salvageable.

Why this happens so often

A great deal of Sydney automation was installed between 2000 and 2015 by small operators. Many are no longer trading, and the programming files went with them.

Without the file, most trades won't touch the system, because changing anything risks breaking what still works. So the owner is told the only option is replacement, which is a very expensive answer to a recoverable problem.

A lost programming file isn't the end

The programming lives on the devices as well as in the file. We can interrogate the network, read what's physically on it and rebuild a working project from that.

Once it's rebuilt, you own a current, documented copy, which means you're never in this position again.

What we can do with an orphaned system

  • Rebuild the programming database from the live network
  • Replace failed dimmers, relays, keypads and power supplies
  • Replace end-of-life touchscreens, or move control to a phone or tablet
  • Extend the system into a renovation rather than starting again
  • Document the whole thing so the next fault is a one-visit job
  • Where it genuinely is at end of life, plan a staged migration rather than a single rip-out

We'll tell you honestly if replacement is the right call. In most homes it isn't.

How it works

Tell us the symptoms

Describe what the system is doing, or refusing to do. We'll tell you what's likely involved before anyone comes out.

On-site diagnosis

We find whether the fault is hardware, programming or the network before quoting a fix.

Repaired and tested

Parts replaced, programming restored, and tested with you before we leave.

What a service call costs

$330
to attend, including the first hour on site
$198
per hour after the first hour, in 30 minute blocks

The $330 is credited against the repair if you go ahead with it, and we quote the repair before we start it. All prices include GST. No travel charge, and nothing on the invoice you haven't agreed to.

Questions we get asked

Nobody has the programming file. Is my system finished?

No. We can read what's on the network and rebuild the project. Losing the file is inconvenient, not fatal.

Three electricians have told me to replace the whole thing. Are they wrong?

Often they're answering a different question. They can't program it, so replacement is the only option they can offer. That isn't the same as the system being beyond repair.

Can you take over a system you didn't install?

Yes, routinely. Most of our service work is on systems installed by somebody else.

Will I get a copy of the programming afterwards?

Yes. We document to switchboard and group address level and you keep a copy, so you're never dependent on one person again.

Where we attend

Servicing across the Northern Beaches, the Eastern Suburbs, the Lower and Upper North Shore and the Inner West, from Palm Beach and Mosman to Point Piper, Vaucluse, Wahroonga and Balmain.
