What's probably wrong

You don't need to know what system you have. That's our job. Almost every fault we attend falls into one of four categories, and knowing which one you have changes the cost enormously.

A failed component

A dimmer, relay, power supply or keypad has died. Individual parts, not the system. The most common fault and usually the cheapest.

Lost programming

The hardware is healthy but the logic is gone, often after a blackout, a switchboard change or a failed controller. The system looks dead and is entirely recoverable.

A dead interface

The touchscreen or app has failed while the system behind it still works. Replacing the interface, or moving control to a phone, fixes it without touching the rest.

A network or controller fault

The devices are fine but can't talk to each other. Usually a bus fault, a gateway that has dropped offline, or a controller needing replacement.

How to tell what system you have

Look at your switchboard, not your wall switches. Automated homes have a row of DIN-rail modules in the board with a brand printed on them.

  • Clipsal or Schneider, marked C-Bus: see C-Bus repairs
  • Philips Dynalite, or modules marked DyNet: see Dynalite repairs
  • KNX, an open standard used by many manufacturers: see KNX service
  • Something else, or no idea: send us a photo of the switchboard and we'll tell you

If the board has ordinary circuit breakers and nothing else, you probably have smart switches or a hub rather than a wired automation system, which is a different and usually simpler repair.

Why other electricians say no

Most electricians can replace a dimmer. Far fewer can program one back into the system afterwards, and a wired automation system won't work until that second step is done.

That's why so many of these jobs get a new part fitted and still don't work, and why owners are often told the whole system needs replacing when it doesn't. We're a licensed electrical contractor and we write the programming ourselves. One visit, one team.

How a service call works

Tell us the symptoms

Describe what the system is doing, or refusing to do. We'll tell you what's likely involved before anyone comes out.

On-site diagnosis

We find whether the fault is hardware, programming or the network before quoting a fix.

Repaired and tested

Parts replaced, programming restored, and tested with you before we leave.

What a service call costs

$330
to attend, including the first hour on site
$198
per hour after the first hour, in 30 minute blocks

The $330 is credited against the repair if you go ahead with it, and we quote the repair before we start it. All prices include GST. No travel charge, and nothing on the invoice you haven't agreed to.

Questions we get asked

My lights stopped working and I don't know what system I have.

Send a photo of your switchboard. The automation modules are usually a row of units on DIN rail with the brand printed on them, and that tells us almost everything we need before attending.

Do I have to replace the whole system?

Rarely. Most faults are a single failed component or lost programming. Full replacement is the most expensive and disruptive option, and in most homes it isn't necessary.

The company that installed it no longer exists. Can you still help?

Yes. It's one of the most common reasons we're called. We can read what's on the network and rebuild the programming without the original files.

How much does a callout cost?

$330 including the first hour on site, then $198 an hour in 30 minute blocks. All prices include GST. The $330 is credited against the repair if you go ahead, and we quote the repair before starting it.

Do you fix motorised blinds, awnings or louvre roofs?

When they're part of a home automation system, yes. On their own remote and not connected to a system, the manufacturer or the original installer is the right call.

Where we attend

Servicing across the Northern Beaches, the Eastern Suburbs, the Lower and Upper North Shore and the Inner West, from Palm Beach and Mosman to Point Piper, Vaucluse, Wahroonga and Balmain.
